BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will deliberate on plans to enhance cooperation in energy saving and energy during their upcoming meeting at Visakhapatnam for a two-day SAARC meeting starting Monday, 04 July.

“The first meeting of the BRICS Working Group on ‘Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency’ will be held at Visakhapatnam during 4-5 July, 2016. Participation from all BRICS countries, viz., Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa has been confirmed,” the Power Ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, the member nations will agree upon a joint statement to guide the future roadmap for BRICS working group on energy saving and energy efficiency during their meeting.

India, one of the five members of the world’s emerging bloc, will also highlight its efforts in energy saving and energy efficiency, particularly the LED street lighting initiative and performance achievement & trade (PAT) programme for industrial energy efficiency.

The ministry of power will host the meeting of the working group to discuss and showcase the country’s energy saving initiatives taken by the present government.

Earlier, BRICS members had signed a Memorandum of Mutual Understanding in energy efficiency and energy saving in their meeting in November 20, 2015 in Moscow.

“They agreed to pursue their energy cooperation through joint research and technology projects; technology transfer; conferences, lectures and seminars; and exchange of experience and best practices,” the statement said.

India will hold the BRICS chair for 2016. It will accordingly shape and steer the BRICS agenda and will host sectoral meetings/activities across various cities in the country.
