China keen to import Indian handmade carpets

A total of 303 exporters from all over India participated in the India Carpet Expo in Varanasi and displayed their handmade products

China on Tuesday expressed interest to sign an agreement with CPEC to promote and sell Indian handmade carpets in Chinese city of Yiwu.  An eight-member Chinese delegation, lead by Wang Bi Rong, Director General Bureau of Commerce, visited the India Carpet Expo in Varanasi on an invitation of CEPC( Carpet Export Promotion Council) to study the qualities of Indian handmade carpets. “The Chinese delegation was very excited to visit the Expo and informed that they witnessed a very high quality in Indian handmade carpets, which they did not find in China. The delegation was confident that the Indian handmade carpets would get a very good sales response in Yiwu City,” said Ministry of Textiles in a statement. Wang also expressed willingness to have a strong representation of Indian handmade carpet exporters in Yiwu during May 2016 expo. CEPC Chairman Kuldeep R Wattal said that such collaborations would boost exports of Indian carpets to China.  Wattal assured the Chinese delegation that Indian industry is looking forward to China and that China will be one of India’s major business partner countries in coming years. Ravinder Jaiswal, MLA, Varanasi also met exporters and appreciated the new developments made by the Indian carpet manufacturers. “He assured the carpet exporters and CEPC that he will apprise Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the efforts made by Carpet Export Promotion Council in providing excellent infrastructure to the manufacturers from Varanasi-Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt in promoting Indian carpets and helping the artisans and weavers of this area,” the ministry said. The four-day expo began on October 11 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh with an aim to promote and sell Indian handmade carpets to Indian as well as global buyers. A total of 303 exporters from all over India participated in the expo and displayed their handmade carpets, floor coverings and other items. The expo has attracted 350 overseas buyers and 276 buying representatives from various parts of the world.
