Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Tuesday that the state-run slaughterhouses produces about 2,000 kg of beef a day and the additional demand for beef in the state is met by importing it from neighbouring state like Karnataka.

In a reply to question by a BJP member in state assembly, over the beef quality supplied by the neighbouring state, Parrikar said that the beef procured from Karnataka would be put to proper process of inspection.

“Approximately 2,000 kg beef is produced per day at the state abattoir - the Goa Meat Complex Limited, while rest of beef is brought in from Karnataka,” said the Chief Minister, who also holds the portfolio of animal husbandry.

“The projected beef sale in the state, based on the inspection charges paid by meat traders/dealers is around 2,300-2,400 kg per day,” he said.

“The remaining quantity of beef to meet the demand is imported by meat traders from neighbouring states, specifically Karnataka,” he added.

He was replying to a question raised by BJP MLA Nilesh Cabral, who expressed concerns over quality of beef procured from Karnataka. Cabral also suggested that meat production could be increased at the Goa abattoir.

Parrikar said that he would issue guidelines to the concerned departments to carry out proper inspection of the beef procured from Karnataka.

“The Goa Meat Complex Ltd has no problem in slaughtering more animals if they are brought there by traders,” he said.
