India ranks 110 out of 149 nations on the SDG Index

India has been ranked 110 out of 149 countries that have been assessed with regard to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDG Index highlighted, that almost all nations face key challenges when accomplishing the given ambitious goals. Sweden ranked first in the chart, followed by Denmark and Norway.
Jeffrey Sachs, Director of SDSN, said, “The Sustainable Development Goals are stretch goals, but they are within reach if countries work towards them with clarity and determination. The SDG Index and Dashboard can help each country to chart out a practical path for achieving the goals.”
The report also made a startling clarification that the nations which are quite close to achieving the SDGs are not large economies but small, developed nations like Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. This gives a clear indication that the Norwegian countries have always been on the right path to growth and development in every sense of the term.
In the index, Germany was at the 6th rank, the UK at 10th. These were the only G7 nations that were listed in the top 10 performers. While the US was ranked in the 25th position, the other two economies Russia and China hold the 47th and 76th, respectively. India is 110 on the chart, with Lesotho ranking 113, Pakistan 115, Myanmar 117, Bangladesh 118 and Afghanistan 139. Underdeveloped and developing nations understandably ranked low on the index as these countries often have fewer resources compared to developed nations. Liberia and Central African Republic are at the bottom and have a long way to go in fulfilling the SDGs.
The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) along with Bertelsmann Stiftung started a new SDG Index and Dashboard and gave an assessment card while tracking the progress of SDGs and to ensure accountability.
The index gathered available statistics for 149 nations to analyse where each nation stands in the year 2016, with regard to attaining the SDGs. The index then ranked the nations depending on their performance on 17 ambitious global goals of sustainable development, that is, social inclusion, economic development, and environmental sustainability, supported by good governance. This is a dynamic joint initiative by Bertelsmann Stiftung and SDSN, as their assessments help nations to identify priorities that need timely actions and highlights the major challenges that every nation faces in attaining SDGs.
