JNPT records 5.11% growth in container traffic in Q1

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s biggest container port, recorded a rise of 5.11% in container traffic by handling 1.20 million TEUs, during the first three months of the current fiscal over the same period last year.

“India’s largest container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), registered a 5.11% growth in container traffic in the first quarter of the current financial year by handling 1.20 million TEUs as compared to 1.14 million TEUs in the corresponding quarter of the last financial year,” Ministry of Shipping said in a statement. 

TEU or twenty-foot equivalent unit are used for measuring the cargo carrying capacity of a ship.

Port owned container terminal, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT) handled 4.01 lakh TEUs during the April-June period compared to 3.99 lakh TEUs in the same period last year, registering an increase of 0.5%. 

The new 330 m terminal project at JNP, Nhava Sheva India Gateway Terminal (NSIGT) managed 1.34 lakh TEUs of container traffic during the first quarter of this fiscal as against 1.17 lakh TEUs in the corresponding period last year.

The APM terminal handled 4.99 lakh TEUs of traffic, registering a growth of 14.5% over the previous year.

Besides, the port registered a growth of 2.8% in the overall volume of cargo handled in the April-June period of the current fiscal year. The Port handled an overall cargo volume of 16.35 million tonnes against the 15.90 million tonnes in the same period last year. 

During the last fiscal of 2016-17, JNPT handled 4.5 million TEUs of container traffic, which is the largest ever container traffic since its inception.
