The Indian arm of Japanese auto maker Nissan Motor Company, Nissan Motor India, on Sunday reported an increase of 21% in sales in domestic market at 3,711 units in the month of December, compared to 3,065 units in the same month in the previous year.

Furthermore, in the initial three quarters of the current financial year, combined sales of Nissan and Datsun witnessed an impressive growth rate of 50%, Nissan Motor said in a statement.

Collectively, their sales growth rate was the second fastest amongst the car brands in India for the period April-December 2016 against the same period a year ago, it added.

Arun Malhotra, MD, Nissan Motor India, said, “Nissan India achieved healthy sales in December by posting 21% year-on-year growth despite the challenges of the demonetisation issue. This strong performance came on the back of continued success of Datsun redi-GO and the great customer response to the redi-GO SPORT.”

“The company has consistently achieved strong sales growth in the initial three quarters of this financial year. The growth achieved by us during the period April to December positions us as the 2nd fastest growing company in India in the passenger vehicles segment, a noteworthy achievement for a comparatively young company,” said Malhotra.

In October, the Nissan Motor India group, which manages both the brands Nissan and Datsun, announced its intention to come up with eight new cars models from Datsun and Nissan brands in India by 2021.

These new car models in the pipeline, including the recently-launched model Nissan GT-R and X-Trail Hybrid’s launch in 2017, take the company forward towards the aim of becoming a key force in the country with a 5% share in the market by 2020.
