State-run NTPC, for the first time ever, traded Un-Requisitioned Surplus (URS) power from its four thermal stations, namely Unchahar, Vidhyanchal, Rihand and Dadri at Indian Energy Exchange.

NTPC, the Maharatna public sector undertaking, traded the surplus power, stated IEX.

The prominent power generating stations always work a day-ahead of the schedule. Generally, the stations offering cheap power are booked completely by the states. If a situation arises where the states are unwilling to utilize the power, then the power remains Un-Requisitioned, unsold, IEX added.

To enable utilization of unsold power, the power ministry, amended the National Tariff Policy and introduced some provisions allowing the prominent power generating companies to trade their surplus power.

Other power generating firms like Neyveli Lignite, NHPC are also likely to take part in the trade of surplus power, which will create new opportunities in the market.

The total installed capacity of NTPC is 45,548 MW with its own 18 coal-based plants, 7 gas-based stations and 1 gas-based and 6 coal-based joint venture subsidiaries.

NTPC aims to install 1,28,000 MW by 2032. The company, in an effort to meet the power requirements of the country, targeted to add 14,058 MW in its 12th five-year plan.

Of the 14,058 MW, it already installed 1150 MW in April 2015-November 2015, 1290 MW in the year 2014-15, 1835 MW in the year 2013-14 and 4,170 MW in the year 2012-13.

Besides the aim to go global, NTPC is also in talks for a joint venture coal-based plant of 1,320 MW capacity with Bangladesh Power Development Board.
