Prez Mukherjee attends Round Table in Beijing

10 MoUs exchanged between the institutions of higher education of India and China.

President Pranab Mukherjee, who was on a state visit to China, affirmed that India and China are confident, constructive nations in 21st century.

He was speaking at the Round Table held at Peking University of Beijing, in the presence of Vice Chancellors and heads from Indian and Chinese educational institutions.

After discussions among the representatives of both the sides, ten MoUs were exchanged between the institutions of higher education of India and China for cooperation. While addressing the gathering present at the Round Table, the President gave instances of Indian education, which dated back to 6th century.

The ancient universities like Takshashila, Nalanda, Valabhi, Vikramashila, Odantapuri and Somapura attracted scholars and prominent people from around the world, he said while adding that Takshashila in a way was the most ‘connected’ of Indian universities. Takshashila, a hub for four civilizations-Indian, Chinese, Persian and Greek, has umpteen renowned names in its alumnus. Alexander, Panini, Chandragupta Maurya, Charaka, Chinese Buddhist monks Xuanzang and Xa Fian have all been associated with Takshashila.

The President said with the support of Indian and international partners, the Indian government is taking many initiatives to revive the tradition and build more such centres of excellence which can be ranked among the top institutions of the world.

The President emphasized on the need for a conducive educational eco-system for promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation. He further stated that innovation and research are the key factors to achieve maximum potential for production. Urging for innovation, Mukherjee stated that the growth of the nation in future will not be benefitted much from the utilization of resources with the current technology, but advanced technology.

The need to bridge educational institutions with the industry via research, entrepreneurship and innovation is essential for continuous momentum in the manufacturing and production sector, besides balancing economic growth and development, he added.

Mukherjee’s four-day visit as the head of the state will come to an end on Friday.
