IG International imports first batch of organic apples from USA

India to halt imports of Chinese apples and pears after they fail pesticide tests

The Dollar Business Bureau India has issued a directive to halt the imports of Chinese apples and pears from June 1. According to a statement made by the Ministry of Agriculture, the recent imports of Chinese apples and pears contained harmful microorganisms. Indian National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) reported that 26 batches of Chinese pears and apples were contaminated and the same was conveyed to the Chinese Inspection and Quarantine Bureau on May 31. A second batch of apples and pears from China once again revealed harmful microorganisms. Since no action was taken to remedy the situation, the Indian government decided to temporarily halt the import of apples and pears from that country starting from June. Govt wants Apple to consider new policy for local mfg

PTI The government wants iPhone maker Apple to consider a new manufacturing scheme offering duty benefits to set up its plants in the country. "Apple had asked for a set of concessions. For a period of 15 years all the components that Apple imports, they want them to be free of duty. We have a phased manufacturing programme (PMP) because we want more and more value addition to come to the country. Easing import curb to increase availability of apples in market

Source: PTI    Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) on Thursday welcomed the union government’s decision to relax import restrictions on apples, saying it would help increase availability of the fruit in the domestic market. US, EU question Indias apple import policy

The Dollar Business Bureau European Union and the United States raised concerns over India’s recent policy to limit the entry of imported apples to only the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) in Navi Mumbai and questioned India of distorting trade compliance under its WTO commitments.  They requested India to give further information on the consequences if apples are imported through other ports, i.e. Chennai, Kolkata and Krishnapatnam. “The US meanwhile said the measure has so far "had an impact on trade" and took issue over the lack of a comment period before the new policy was implemented.
