The Dollar Business Bureau  American tech giant Apple Inc has sought changes in the phased manufacturing programme (PMP) of the government as the iPhone maker plans to establish a manufacturing unit in India. The Ministry of Electronics and IT came out with the PMP with the objective to boost indigenous manufacturing of mobile phones by offering tax sops and other incentives on accessories and components used in the devices. This programme will be implemented over a period of time. “The department of electronics and information technology (DeitY) is looking at this. Confirming the news to the media, a PTI source said, "Apple is selling iPhone SE in India at select stores. Apple has been seeking concessions from the government as it plans to bring its supply chain in the country since it cannot source these inputs locally. The Cupertino-based company also seeks duty exemptions on the products that it procures from special economic zones (SEZs). Apple team to meet Govt officials on Jan 25

The Dollar Business Bureau Notwithstanding earlier claims that US President-elect Donald Trump had exhorted Apple to relocate its manufacturing plants in the United States, a team of Apple will meet later this month several senior officials from various ministries, including from Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance, to discuss setting up a manufacturing unit in India. Govt reluctant to give special sops for Apple plant in India

The Dollar Business Bureau  The Indian government is not likely to extend concessions to the iPhone-maker Apple for setting up its manufacturing plant, government sources said, underscoring that no other foreign firm has asked for similar kind of incentive from the government. Last year, the US-based technology major has urged the Indian government to give tax and other market incentives to enter into the country’s manufacturing sector. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry officials said they should not be given any such benefits since no other cellphone manufacturer has sought similar incentives from the ministry. US, EU question Indias apple import policy

The Dollar Business Bureau European Union and the United States raised concerns over India’s recent policy to limit the entry of imported apples to only the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) in Navi Mumbai and questioned India of distorting trade compliance under its WTO commitments.  They requested India to give further information on the consequences if apples are imported through other ports, i.e. Chennai, Kolkata and Krishnapatnam. “The US meanwhile said the measure has so far "had an impact on trade" and took issue over the lack of a comment period before the new policy was implemented.
