Indias 12 major ports register a growth of 3.46% during Apr-Nov

The Dollar Business Bureau The cargo traffic at country's major ports have witnessed a growth of 3.46% during April-November 2017 period, with the 12 top ports handling 439.66 million tonnes of cargo.  “Major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.46% and together handled 439.66 million tonnes of cargo during the period April to November, 2017 as against 424.96 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year,” said a statement by the Ministry of Shipping on Thursday.  During the eight-month period, nine ports including Kolkata, Paradip, Chennai, Cochin, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, New Mangalore, Kandla and JNPT have recorded a positive growth in cargo traffic. Cargo volume at 12 major ports up by 6.3% in April 2017

The Dollar Business Bureau April 2017 saw an increase in cargo movement at India's 12 major ports, which handled a total capacity of 55.75 million tonnes (mt) during the month. An increase of 6.27% was recorded, in comparison with the cargo volume reported in April 2016, which stood at 52.46 mt. The increase in cargo traffic was attributed to the rising demand demonstrated for raw materials like iron ore and coking coal. During the month, Iron ore volumes spiked by 40% to 5.37 mt while coking coal traffic grew by 15% to 4.61 mt. GHIAL welcomes worlds largest cargo aircraft

The Dollar Business Bureau GMR Hyderabad International Airport (P) Ltd (GHIAL) welcomes the largest cargo aircraft in the world, the Antonov AN-225 Mriya, on Wednesday, the company said in a statement. Having almost 240 world records in its name, the aircraft with huge body is propelled by six turbofan engines and is the heaviest and longest airplane ever made. The aircraft can lift a takeoff weight of 640 metric tonnes, it said. Government to develop new cargo terminals at 24 airports

The Dollar Business Bureau The government has identified 24 airports across the country for the development of cargo terminals. Airports located in tier-2 and tier-3 cities have been identified where common user domestic cargo terminal (CUDCT) will be established after checking feasibility, Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State, Civil Aviation, said in Lok Sabha. The facilities will be developed after carrying out feasibility study and minor modifications in the old/redundant passenger terminal buildings, he said. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has decided to utilise redundant passenger buildings with minor modifications such as civil or electrical works or by creating a new facility for international cargo operations. Indian government announces measures to reform shipping industry

The Dollar Business Bureau The Indian government has taken a slew of measures to help revive India’s shipping industry and more reforms are likely to be announced soon to help speed up the transformation. India’s merchandise trade is heavily dependent on seaborne trade and ports. According to the Shipping Ministry, India’s shipping industry accounts for around 95% of India’s total merchandise trade by volume and 70% in terms of value. Meanwhile, total cargo traffic in India is forecast to grow to around 1,758 million metric tonnes (MMT) by 2017, up about 92% from around 911.5 MMT in 2012.  However, complicated procedures, lack of connectivity and slow paperwork has prevented the shipping industry from transforming itself and meet growing needs. ...
