Indias food grain output to record 275.68 MT in 2016-17

The Dollar Business Bureau With good monsoon rains and various policy initiatives by the Government, India’s overall production of food grain to be increased by 2.3 million tonne to an all-time high of 275.68 million tonnes in the crop year 2016-17, according to the fourth advance estimates released by the Agriculture Ministry on Wednesday. Record production has been achieved in wheat, rice, pulses and coarse cereals in the crop year that ended in June.  The previous record of food grain production was 265.04 million tonnes, achieved in the crop year 2013-14 (July-June). Wheat sowing rises 7%, pulse acreage up 11% this Rabi season

The Dollar Business Bureau Notwithstanding the government’s demonetisation scheme, sowing area of wheat increased 7% to 313.14 lakh hectares this season, while that of pulses also went up 11% to 157.68 lakh hectares so far during the ongoing Rabi (winter-sown) season. Export bodies seek govt attention to arrest falling exports

On Monday, the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) is likely to hold a meeting with exporters and discuss measures to revive the sector. “We have a meeting with the DGFT on Monday next week. Indias cereal exports to Nepal forecast to increase sharply in 2014-15

The Dollar Business Bureau India’s exports of cereals to Nepal are expected to increase significantly in the marketing year 2014 – 15 (July – June) due to a below-normal harvest in Nepal this year. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), rice production in Nepal is expected to decline by around 9% y/y to about 4.6 million tonnes. This is mainly due to below average monsoon rains this year but floods and landslides in August 2014 in Nepal has also hurt production in the country, said FAO.
