India's handicraft exports grow over 8% in 2015-16

The Dollar Business Bureau India's handicraft exports increased by over 8% to nearly Rs 31,000 crore in 2015-16, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani informed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. "According to the provisional data available, the exports of handicrafts have shown an increase of Rs.2,414.79 crore from Rs.28,524.48 crore to Rs.30,939.27 crore -- an increase of 8.46% in rupees term in 2015-16 as compared to previous year," Irani said. New framework to promote e-marketing of handloom products

The Dollar Business Bureau The government has brought in a new policy to promote the e-marketing of handloom products. The move is aimed at attracting young customers who prefer shopping online. The move comes days after the government announced initiatives like 'India Handloom' brand and the ‘National Handloom Day’ to encourage the weaving industry. As per the new policy, the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) under the Ministry of Textiles would collaborate with approved e-commerce companies to promote handloom products. Govt schemes key for increasing agri productivity: Minister

And, there was only a 2% decrease in the sowing area, during the last year.
