Indian Cabinet okays India-Palestine MoU on agriculture cooperation

The Dollar Business Bureau The Indian Cabinet has given its approval to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and the Ministry of Agriculture in the State of Palestine on agriculture cooperation. This was signed in May 2017, when Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs had visited the country. What could seem to be an innocuous agreement, one should also look at the extra efforts on the part of the Indian government to balance its ties with Israel, Palestine, Iran and the West Asian countries. South India's sugar production hit by drought

The Dollar Business Bureau Even though sugar demand is expected to decline by 3%-4%, prices are likely to firm up due to record low production estimates in the current year. A prolonged drought in the sugar producing regions of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu; the second, third and fourth largest sugar producing states of India respectively; has caused productivity to take a serious hit. Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) estimates a 40% - 50% decline in the yield from sugarcane fields during the season ending September 2017. The state of Maharashtra, which had produced 84.2 lakh tonnes of sugar in the previous season, is estimated to contribute merely 42 lakh tonnes to the nation's sugar output in the current season. Telangana announces welfare-oriented, tax-free budget for 2017-18

The Dollar Business Bureau Telangana on Sunday presented a tax-free and welfare-oriented 2017-18 budget, focusing on improving irrigation and revitalising traditional occupations of the state’s backwards classes, with a proposed expenditure of about Rs.1.50 lakh crore. “An amount of Rs.1,49,646 crore is proposed as total expenditure consisting of an estimated committed expenditure of Rs.61,607.20 crore and an expenditure of Rs.88,038.80 crore under ‘expenditure on schemes’,” Telangana’s Finance Minister E Rajender said in his Budget speech. This year’s budget was in line with the Central Government’s decision to abandon the classification of expenditure into plan and non-plan and continue with “the Constitutional mandate of classifying expenditure into revenue and capital”. Nabard to give Rs 7,000 crore to Telangana for 11 irrigation projects

The Dollar Business Bureau  The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) will be extending a loan of Rs 7000 crore to the Telangana Govt for 11 irrigation projects. The loan is a part of the MoU between the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and NABARD for providing assistance to 99 irrigation projects in the State. These projects come under the PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana programme (PMKSY).  The Telangana Minister for Irrigation, T Harish Rao met Central ministers, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Uma Bharti and RadhaMohan and apprised them of the issues related to their ministries in the State. TN attracts highest investment in the irrigation sector

The Dollar Business Bureau Tamil Nadu has been ranked the highest in terms of growth in live investments attracted by the irrigation sector, witnessing a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32 percent during the period of 2004-05 and 2014-15, revealed the trade body ASSOCHAM. In a statement issued on Tuesday, ASSOCHAM said that investments attracted by Tamil Nadu in the irrigation sector, from private as well as public sources have jumped from a mere Rs.151 crore in 2004-05 to more than Rs.2,400 crore in 2014-15. The share of the state in this regard has also risen from 0.1 percent to 0.4 percent, respectively.
