Kharif foodgrain production to surpass last year numbers: Agri Secretary

The Dollar Business Bureau Agriculture Secretary Shobhana K Pattanayak said on Saturday that the foodgrain production in the ongoing kharif season 2017-18 is expected to exceed last year's record output of 138.04 million tonnes on account of higher sowing area and good monsoon.  Till now, more than 80% of the sowing of kharif crops such as pulses, paddy, cotton, oilseeds, jute and sugarcane, has been completed and the sowing will continue in some regions until next month, he told PTI.  Crop area of around 19 lakh hectare across the country has been impacted by floods and farmers are expected to take up other crops in the season once the water goes down, Pattanayak said. Odisha targets to procure record 60 lakh MT paddy this year

The Dollar Business Bureau Positive to set a record this year to procure around 60 lakh metric tonne (MT) of paddy, the government of Odisha said on Tuesday that the exercise for Rabi crop would begin from May 1. P K Mohapatra, Secretary, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare said that the Odisha State Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd (OSCSC) would be going for the 2nd phase of procurement of Rabi paddy from May 1 to June 30. Odisha govt. eyeing heavy paddy procurement to enhance rural economy

Govt to further import 80,000 MT Masur, 90,000MT Tur

The Dollar Business Bureau In a bid to buffer stock of pulses, the Government of India has directed a further import of 80,000 MT masur and 90,000MT tur. The development was given a green signal during a meeting of Price Stabilization Fund, which reviewed the procurement and distribution of pulses from buffer stock. The meeting was chaired by Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Hem Pande. The government will be fetching the pulses via imports to the tune of 1, 81,000 MT, out of which 36,000 MT have already arrived. The domestic market and farmers have also contributed to the stock with 1,20,000 MT pulses. Maize productivity up 4.8 times: Radha Mohan Singh

The Dollar Business Bureau Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh said maize productivity in India has increased 4.8 times, maize farming improved 2.9 times and its yield enhanced 14 times since 1950 due to the efforts of farmers, scientists and also the policy makers. The Agriculture Minister was speaking at the India Maize Summit, organised by by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) in New Delhi on Thursday. Govt sets high targets for foodgrains output

The Dollar Business Bureau With hopes of abundant rainfall after two straight years of drought, the Centre aims to reach a target of 270.10 million tonnes of food grain production in the Crop Year 2016-2017. The country had touched a new record with an output of 265.04 million tonnes in Crop year 2013-14. However, the output in Crop Year 2015 and 2016 plunged to 252.02 and 253.23 million tonnes, respectively. The reason behind the falling figures of output was the droughts witnessed in over ten states. Odisha govt brings in new control order on paddy procurement

Source: PTI In a bid to maintain discipline in paddy procurement and regulate the custom mills, the state government today decided to bring the Odisha Rice and Paddy Procurement and Custom Milling of Rice Order, 2016.  A proposal in this regard by the food supplies and consumer welfare department was approved at a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here. "This control order has several safeguards with respect to procurement of paddy, delivery of paddy for custom mills, direction for milling of paddy into rice, ensuring milling of paddy within the Kharif marketing season," Chief Secretary A P Padhi told reporters.
