Indias 12 major ports register a growth of 3.46% during Apr-Nov

The Dollar Business Bureau The cargo traffic at country's major ports have witnessed a growth of 3.46% during April-November 2017 period, with the 12 top ports handling 439.66 million tonnes of cargo.  “Major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.46% and together handled 439.66 million tonnes of cargo during the period April to November, 2017 as against 424.96 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year,” said a statement by the Ministry of Shipping on Thursday.  During the eight-month period, nine ports including Kolkata, Paradip, Chennai, Cochin, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, New Mangalore, Kandla and JNPT have recorded a positive growth in cargo traffic. Some major ports of India lost over Rs.53.5 crore: CAG

The Dollar Business Bureau Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has said that some of the 12 major ports of India, including Kolkata and Mumbai, have lost more than Rs.53.5 crore due to under-recovery or revenue losses. Mumbai Port incurred a loss of Rs.23.10 crore due to failure of revising parking charges, while Kolkata Port witnessed under-recovery of around Rs.13.36 crore, the Government auditor has said in its recent report, which was submitted in the Parliament. “Failure of Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) to revise parking charges resulted in loss of revenue of Rs.23.10 crore over the past six years on night parking charges alone,” CAG said. India's thermal coal imports up 1.3% in April-May

The Dollar Business Bureau India's thermal coal imports through 12 major public sector ports increased 1.3% at 18.33 million MT during April-May this year, from 18.09 million MT in the corresponding period previous year, as per the data released by Indian Ports Association on Wednesday. However, coking coal imports have decreased 8.4% to 8.7 million MT in the period of review against 9.5 million MT during the same period last year, according to the data. During the first two months of this financial year, Paradip port handled the maximum share of thermal coal imports at 5.1 million MT with 4% growth from 4.9 million MT in the previous year period. Govt to invest Rs.14,225 cr on various port projects

The Dollar Business Bureau  In an effort to level India’s major ports at par with that of its contemporaries across the world, the government on Wednesday announced that it will create additional capacities through development of new terminals and modernisation of existing projects. The Ministry of Shipping will develop 36 projects in the financial year 2015-16 with total investments of Rs.14,225 crores and capacity enhancement by 162 MTPA (million tonnes per annum). Container movements at ports up 1.92% during April-October

The Dollar Business Bureau Container movements at major government-run ports have increased marginally by 1.92% between April and October this year despite the continuous decline in India’s outbound shipments. According to the Federation of Indian Export Organsiations (FIEO), 12 major state-owned ports have collectively handled 4.76 million 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) during April-October period, up 1.92% from last year’s 4.67 million TEUs.
