Ministry of Agriculture estimates record foodgrains production in 2016-17

The Dollar Business Bureau The Ministry of Agriculture has released the second production estimates of foodgrains for the crop year ending 2016-17 (July-June). A fairly good monsoon after two consecutive years of sparse rainfall has boosted production estimates to record levels of 271.98 mt (million tonnes). This year's forecast beats the highest foodgrains production record of 265.04 mt achieved in 2013-14 by 6.94 mt. There is an 8% increase in comparison to last year's (2015-16) production levels which stood at 251.57 mt. The current year's estimate is higher than the average foodgrain production in the last five years (2011-2012 to 2015-16) by 14.97 mt. Rice, pulses, wheat, maize, tur, urad, oilseeds and coarse cereals are the categories that are likely to achieve record production this year. India to import 5 lakh tonnes of maize

The Dollar Business Bureau India will import 5 lakh tonnes of maize (corn) to keep a check on its domestic price rise and hoarding. A tweet by her ministry said that the Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has approved importing of 5,00,000 MT of maize under Tariff Rate Quota by a state trading enterprise. The decision to import maize has been taken amid the fall in domestic production of the crop and to check its price rise and prevent hoarding. As part of the Tariff Rate Quota Scheme, the government approves inbound shipments of four products, including corn, at concessional rates of customs duty. Maize productivity up 4.8 times: Radha Mohan Singh

The Dollar Business Bureau Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh said maize productivity in India has increased 4.8 times, maize farming improved 2.9 times and its yield enhanced 14 times since 1950 due to the efforts of farmers, scientists and also the policy makers. The Agriculture Minister was speaking at the India Maize Summit, organised by by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) in New Delhi on Thursday. Over 308 maize hybrid varieties have been distributed in India after 1957. More than 30 hybrids and 10 mixed varieties have been issued during the previous five years. Six-member Swaziland delegation visits HAU

 Source: PTI A six-member delegation of agricultural scientists from Swaziland arrived at Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) here today to learn about cultivation practices of maize crop. This is the second time delegates from the African nation have visited HAU. A delegation had visited the campus in September last year, a release said. The delegation, comprising of agricultural scientists from the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Swaziland, called on Vice-Chancellor K S Khokhar, who had a detailed discussion with them regarding agricultural scenario in both the countries.
