India and the Australian state of Tasmania look to scale up their government, trade and investments, sports cooperation during the Tasmanian trade delegation’s upcoming visit to New Delhi, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram next week.

The Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman, Minister for State Growth Matthew Groom, will be accompanied by Tasmanian Ambassadors and cricketers Ricky Ponting and David Boon, government and business leaders across education, energy, food and beverage and tourism sectors.

Premier Hodgman said there were considerable growth opportunities for Tasmania in India, which currently accounts for less than 3% of the state's total exports.

"India is only our 11th highest trading partner. Clearly there's scope for further growth given that it's one of the largest economies in the world and the fastest growing," Hodgman said.

The meeting with the government official and business leaders envisages to strengthen economic corporation, while highlighting what Tasmania can offer to investors, visitors, and students. The visiting delegation will also meet investors who already have businesses in Tasmania — including Sunpharma and Vedanta.

Their visit will also give them opportunities to finalise certain business and sporting exchange programmes.

Earlier this year, a similar mix of delegation from the state of South Australia visited New Delhi.
